The Games

Posted by Skrud at Friday, September 16th 2005 at 12:51pm

Yesterday I walked into the Games Workshop (often referred to as “The Nerd Store”) in the Eaton Centre with Leilani and did something unthinkably nerdy: We played a 4-turn demo of the Lord of the Rings Strategy Tabletop Battle Game with an over-enthusiastic coach/tutor named John. I was the evil orcs of Mordor trying to prevent Leilani’s elves from stealing back the mummified Frodo with little figurines on an elaborately built game board. It was a very back-and-forward battle, and I often lost the dice rolls. Until the end when I drove back the foolish men and elves and kept Frodo for myself. The game was surprisingly fun and I wouldn’t mind wandering back in there for an afternoon and playing a full game. We even got these little battle figurines as souvenirs, and an offer to come back anytime and they’ll show us how to paint the miniatures for free. (You see, the way these games work is that you have little miniature character figurines and they’re usually made of pewter or plastic or something, and then you paint them yourself, and then you battle them with dice). This Games Workshop place is a one-stop shop for all your nerd-gaming needs. :D I’m probably going to go back to paint my little souvenir, but I don’t think I’m ready to drop $60 on a Battle Strategy Game Set that I will probably never use …

I suppose you can say I suffered penance for this bout of nerdism (or for walking into a nerd store with a girl) by playing Dream Phone later on. Yes, that’s right. The game where you call a whole bunch of different boys to try and find out which one likes you. All the boys are so 80’s that it’s disturbing. There’s even a token nerd, and a couple of guys that look like they’re in their 30’s. You take a card, call the guy’s number and then you get a clue. Something like “He looks good in everything he wears” (which everyone can hear) and then “but he’s not wearing glasses!” (which only you hear). So then you look at the game board and cross of all the guys on your little list (you have a little list) that are wearing glasses. You keep doing this until you’re ready to guess at the boy who likes you. Then you call his number (prefixed by a # symbol) and if you’re right he says “You’re right, I really like you.” Even cheesier is the fact that there is only one voice for all the characters.

Girls are weird.

Then Harley came by (finally :P) and we watched Mean Girls.

Girls are mean, too.

I went to a Games Workshop in Paris once. It was really sweet - I think I have pictures of it somewhere.

I once dropped like $125 on a Warhammer 40K set and thought it was cool till I saw grown men buying 30$ plastic figurines like they were pez. It made me really sad inside, and I haven’t purchased into the cult since.

Mean Girls was good because: 1) The Lohan factor 2) Tina Fey (screenplay writer, actor, and just awesome)
