Painting a Chaos Warrior

I visted the Games Workshop in the Eaton Centre a while ago with Leilani, where we demoed a Lord of the Rings game and were given some small soldier figurines. Yesterday, we returned for a painting lesson. What good is a small Chaos Warrior Figurine (or “Robot”) unless it’s painted? The loyal Games Workshop employees (Simon and John) first instructed us in the dry-brush stroke with metallic paint to give the figure a nice armor-like metallic base. Then we used their paints of varying colours to paint the piece any way we wanted. Leilani’s was pink, with yellow boots. Mine was mostly blue, with black boots and chainmail. Somehow this took about four hours. The time flew by with conversation among the other painters in the shop. Apparently they even have tournaments and league matches in Warhammer games.
Here are some (really really crappy cell-phone-camera) pictures of our two figurines. Mine is the one with blood on the axe (grim and necro):

I think the painting has a lot of similarities to coding. You get lost in it and can so focused that hours can just fly by. It requires a lot of concentration and some forthought into how you want your little figurine to turn out. It’s also pretty rewarding when you’re finished. I don’t think I’d go and buy games and start painting whole armies, though… Although once in a while it would be fun to drop by and paint a couple of figurines.
If you want to see our Chaos Warriors (they’re much cooler in person than on crappy crappy cell-phone camera), drop by Games Workshop in the Eaton Centre (on the third floor near Old Navy) and look in the gallery. You can ask to see the ones that “Skrud and IronArms” painted, if you’re so inclined (assuming one of the guys we were working with is there).

skrud’s got an artiste side?!
/me scratches it out of the list of sign to the appocalypse
That was SO MUCH FUN. Nerds are very amusing…and I feel as though I have entered their world more in depth where VERY few females have gone before. Now I know why they get together for these painting sessions in the first place…
Oh and I forgot to mention, our robots are gay. Mine kissed Skrud’s.
AHH.. you guys went without me AGAIN!?!? WAHHHH..
Kiwi, I didn’t know you wanted to go.
Once upon a time I was more spaced out that I am currently and decided that it would be a good idea to spend 100$ on Warhammer 40k.
No – I think it would be more apppropriate to say that “I donated 100$ to Games Workshop”, because buying plastic figurines for that much money is almost like paying for a charity dinner: The food isn’t that good, but it’s for a good cause.
Anyway, I have a lot of Warhammer shit and have lost several weeks of my life to painting miniatures.
(Painting and assembling Gundam is totally different though.)
I think your dues are pretty sweet so they must look much nicer in person my friend has 100 diferent figurines that he painted hope you make more and post em see ya…..
